honeymoon regret and relief

I just wanted to say that I'm really glad we didn't take a honeymoon right after our wedding. I'm also really sad that we didn't take a honeymoon right after our wedding.

Here's why.

Glad We Didn't
Because all of this financial stress came up, haunted us all summer long, and started to climax riiiiiiiight around the wedding day. We would have been one hot stress-mess of a duo on the honeymoon, and we would have been cursing ourselves for having spent such a big sum of money on a trip when we might need it throughout the rest of the fall and winter for more important things (like um... food). And also, who wants to take informative-but-entirely-unhelpful phone calls from work regarding such things while they are trying to relax? Ugh. I'm glad we're dealing with this stuff along with our normal routine, instead of poisoning a honeymoon with it!

Sad We Didn't
Because right now, we still have the money to do it. If we had just sucked it up and done it, we'd have had a honeymoon. Our grand plan was to save money all of this year to afford something awesome next year. But now? That may not happen. Making it on a much smaller income is totally possible for us, but making it on a much smaller income while also putting away a sizable amount of money for an awesome summer 2010 honeymoon? That's not so possible. So if/when this financial hardship becomes a norm around our household, our dreams of a honeymoon next summer will probably fade away. Not the worst thing in the world, no, but still kinda shitty.

Anyway, just some thoughts I've been having. I'm sure there are plenty of compromises. We can get away somewhere semi-local, for example, and spend less than $1000. Somewhere with an awesome view of one of the great lakes maybe! That's an option. We WANTED to do something way cooler and more exotic, but eh. There are always options and we can always have fun together, whether we're in Superior, Wisconsin, or Bora Bora. And that is the bright side of this post.

I have to say that I'm glad I decided to try to blog the "bright side" this month. If I hadn't, this blog would be one hell of a depressing read as of late!
