sunshine & unicorns: a blog about love, learning, and life in the upper midwest

our best subject

Last week, in celebration of something great (I'll fill you in on that in good time, promise), we decided to splurge a little. We bought two strobes (for you non-photog types: "big, removable camera flashes"), an umbrella + stand, and a bunch of trigger/receiver sets (a.k.a. "remote controls," so we can fire our flashes from a distance). If you're wondering, the strobes we bought were the Olympus FL-50R ($$$) and a much cheaper Vivitar model as a secondary.

We have both been interested in off-camera lighting for a long time, and justified these investments because we have a wedding in December and a possibly a baby/family session sooner than that.

We haven't received the umbrella, stand, or triggers yet, so we're just shooting with these new strobes attached to our cameras. We're total n00bs at this and pretty much everything we shoot is an experiment. This weekend our subjects included the food I showed you yesterday, various objects and rooms, and little Tiberius. He is a great subject.

[Pink Hubby took these first three photos.]

Rusty

I love this next one. I set it as my desktop background at work. One shot, and I was just goofing around holding him out. And it came out awesome (after some curves and levels adjustments by me, after-the-fact).

Rusty

Rusty likes to watch us eat. We usually sit at the table, so he has taken to sitting on an extra side-chair where he can see us.

[I took these next two, also using a new strobe.]

His chair

Sometimes he'll stay there and sleep for hours after the meal is over.
